Caspar David Friedrich never travelled far into the Nordic countries, yet often forgotten is that he studied neither in Düsseldorf or Munich but in Copenhagen. While his career is often connected to Dresden and German Romanticism he also became an important source of inspiration for Nordic artists. Because the Norwegian Johan Christian Dahl settled in Dresden and became his close friend, contacts were established between Friedrich and artists who came to visit from the North. What personal, professional and aesthetic impact did he have and can it be felt in the paintings of the Nordic painters? And how did this shape the image of the North, which became an important part of Nordic national identity?

Carl-Johan Olsson is curator of 19th century painting at the National Museum in Stockholm. He is currently preparing the exhibition The Romantic Eye at the National Museum, which aims to show that Romanticism was not just a 19th century phenomenon, but that we encounter many questions and ideas from this time today.
Nico Anklam has completed study and research stays in art history, cultural studies and cultural management in various cities. Since 2021, the art historian and exhibition organizer has been director of the museums in the city of Recklinghausen and head of the Kunsthalle Recklinghausen.

Die Vortragsreihe „Über Friedrich reden“ beleuchtet verschiedene Facetten des Malers und Menschen Caspar David Friedrich sowie Aspekte seiner Zeit und der Epoche der Romantik. Die Themen reichen von historischen Hintergründen über Fragen der Naturphilosophie bis hin zu einzelnen Motiven und Aspekte der Maltechnik. Darüber hinaus werden im Rahmen der Reihe auch Einblicke in die Ausstellungsprojekte in Hamburg, Berlin und Dresden gewährt. Gemeinsam geplant und organisiert vom Jubiläumsbüro der Universitäts- und Hansestadt Greifswald, dem Alfried Krupp Wissenschaftskolleg, dem Caspar-David-Friedrich-Institut der Universität Greifswald, der Caspar-David-Friedrich-Gesellschaft und dem Pommerschen Landesmuseum richten sich die Vorträge sowohl an Fachleute wie auch an interessierte Besucher*innen. Die Vorträge finden regelmäßig dienstags oder mittwochs in der letzten Woche eines jeden Monats an verschiedenen Orten statt.
