Stimulation of the innate immune response during stroke predisposes to the development of determental autoimmunity to brain antigens. On the other hand, induction of regulatory immune responses to these same antigens is associated with better stroke outcome. In concert, these data suggest that modulation of the innate and adaptive immune response following stroke may be an important target for intervention.
Kyra Becker is Associate Professor of Neurology and Neurological Surgery at the University of Washington. She headed several research projects on different aspects of immune response during brain injuries. In 1997 Professor Becker has been awarded the Robert G. Siekert New Investigator Award in Stroke of the American Heart Association.
