„Ehrerbietigen Dank der Fakultät, das Herz zieht nach Jerusalem.“ Mit diesen Worten lehnte Gustaf Dalman den ersten Ruf an die Theologische Fakultät der Universität Greifswald höflich ab. Am Ende kam der universalgelehrte Theologe und Orientalist dennoch und gründete 1920 das Institut, das heute seinen Namen trägt. Nach zwei sehnsuchtsvollen Jahren begeht die Tagung das 100-jährige Bestehen des Gustaf-Dalman-Instituts, indem ein internationaler und interreligiöser Fachkreis zusammenkommt, um sich Dalmans Forschung und ihrer Rezeption zu widmen. Das Herz des Jubiläums bildet die 11. Dalman-Lecture. Gerade weil sich die kulturelle und religiöse Überlieferung der südlichen Levante nicht mehr wie in den Gründungstagen des Instituts erforschen lässt, bietet diese Hundertjahrfeier eine willkommene Gelegenheit, Dalmans wegweisende Studien zu würdigen und kritisch einzuordnen.
“Cordial thanks to the faculty, the heart yearns for Jerusalem.” With these words, Gustaf Dalman politely declined the initial offer to join the University of Greifswald faculty. The polymath theologian and orientalist ended up coming anyway, and in 1920 founded the institute that today bears his name. After two years of yearning, this conference marks the Gustaf Dalman Institute’s 100th anniversary by convening an international and interreligious group of experts to examine Dalman’s research and its reception. At the heart of the celebration is the 11th annual Dalman Lecture. While, and precisely because, the cultural and religious heritage of the Southern Levant can no longer be researched as it was in the institute’s early days, this centenary offers a welcome opportunity to acknowledge, and critically assess, Dalman’s groundbreaking studies.
